Amarna Game Review- A New MOBA with an Egyptian Twist: Is it Survival or True MOBA Gaming?

Check out Earn Alliance's Amarna game review, insights and information

Another day, another MOBA to explore. MOBAs are strategy games where players compete in teams on a battlefield, using tactics to gain an advantage over their opponents. While browsing Earn Alliance Wall, you may stumble upon Amarna, a new MOBA game. Let's find out if it's worth playing.

What is Amarna?

Amarna is a top-isometric 3v3 or solo (free-for-all) MOBA game themed around Egyptian lore and exploration near the Nile River. Built on the BNB Chain, it is free to play, with its token, $AMAR, recently launched on June 14, 2024. Developed by HODI Games, Amarna is their first product, aiming to set a high standard in the Web3 gaming ecosystem. Released in January 2023, Amarna is playable on mobile devices via Google Play Store and App Store.

Starting Amarna Gameplay

Upon downloading Amarna, you can log in using your email account. The main lobby features options such as 'Battle,' 'Heroes,' 'Leaderboard,' 'Settings,' and 'Profile.' While the lobby is typical, we noticed the absence of a tutorial to guide new players, which might be challenging for beginners. We started by checking the Heroes section, where you could freely use characters like Simon, the Indiana Jones of Amarna. However, to play in the main battle mode, you need the $AMAR token, so in the beginning, you can only access the practice mode, a free-for-all match with six players.

Queue Time and Live Players

In practice mode, the queue time was around 18 seconds, but we can quickly enter the battlefield. However, you might notice that most of the opponents seemed like AIs, with only 1 or 2 real players. This indicates a potential lack of active users. The daily ranking on the leaderboard showed only one player, suggesting that more marketing is needed to attract players.

Setup of Amarna as a MOBA

Unlike traditional MOBAs with three lanes, Amarna's battlefield is a mid-sized arena with Egyptian-themed decorations. It resembles a survival battle royale game like Mighty Action Heroes, where you spawn with a weapon, move around the map, and engage in combat. When you die, you respawn until the time limit ends.

Gameplay and Hero Selection

Amarna offers 19 heroes, each with unique abilities based on their backgrounds, such as quick shooting, fast movement, high health, and durability. After selecting a hero, you enter the arena to battle using your character's abilities. There is no farming involved; you spawn and start fighting immediately. The goal is to accumulate the most kills by the end of the match.

Overall Thoughts

Playing Amarna, you can quickly understand the basics, but aiming accurately to kill other players and being a top player takes time. Skill gaps are apparent, and some opponents seemed to have strong killing streaks and knew how to best use projectiles and other in-game items. This indicates a need for better balancing and guidance for new players.

The game's controls didn't feel smooth, making it hard to move characters seamlessly. This might be an intentional challenge, but it detracted from the experience.

Moreover, despite the whitepaper's claims that players can join battles and earn tokens, we couldn't play the main battle mode without $AMAR tokens. This discrepancy feels misleading. The game also felt empty due to the lack of active players, making it more like a PvE environment with AIs.

Conclusion

As a MOBA game, Amarna falls short in terms of quality gameplay. It feels more like a survival or team deathmatch game than a true MOBA. The lack of active players, smooth controls, and clear guidance diminishes the overall experience. I don't find Amarna engaging enough to invest time in playing and climbing the leaderboard. While it may not be a game we recommend, you might want to try it yourself to form your own opinion.
